Setting a holiday table at the BDC

Mix natural elements with a generous serving of shiny objects, add a dash of artistic details along with a shot of traditional touches, and your holiday setting is sure to sparkle!

Last week I attended a Boston Design Center lecture and presentation featuring holiday table settings as influenced by Historic New England properties and collections. The table settings were displayed on the 6th floor of the BDC, where the yearly Dream Home event takes place (click here after reading this post to see views of designed spaces
from previous shows).

The Gropius House was the inspiration behind one of the three modernly-festive tablecapes. The Gropius House was the New England home of Walter Gropius, founder of the German design school known as the Bauhaus, and his family members from 1938 to 1983. His wife, Ise, willed the property to Historic New England (at the time it was called The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities) to be used as an historic house museum. Wendy Hubbard of Historic New England presented numerous images of this unique property including this view of its modern dining room. Note the pair of Sori Yanagi Butterfly Stools by the fireplace, leather and chrome chairs by Marcel Breuer, and the round Eero Saarinen tulip table which were loosely interpretted with modern design pieces from the BDC, along with items from the collection of reproductions offered for purchase through
Historic New England.

Placemats were fashioned out of “Shoot for the Moon” wallpaper reproduced by Christopher Norman for Historic New England, and the outside was brought in with this table from Janus et Cie adorned with fresh cut greens, pine cones and faux bois silver candlesticks. Simple black and white ceramic Japanese place settings, as favored by Gropius, complete this modern winter tablescape.

In the second two vignettes, designers Susan Newberg and Phylllis Tracy of Neptune 1 Studios showcased pieces from their collections of decoupaged plates inspired by historical wall-coverings.

The dark blue colorway of “Shoot the Moon” provides a rich backdrop to this table setting featuring plates designed with scenic images captured from the 18th-century English wallpaper that still adorns the Jerimiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

Susan Newberg, whose graphic design expertise has brought new-life to these historic wall-coverings, is pictured here with designer Rosanne Palazola. All of us have design pieces represented at New England Fine Living in Middleton, Massachusetts.

Nancy Faye Glass (a design friend of mine that I met while working on The Stevens Estate in North Andover) and Phyllis Tracy are both wearing designer fashions from the Peabody Essex Museum boutique. I recognized Nancy’s black and white wool dress-coat as a piece from the Iris Apfel collection.

Iris would love this third table setting adorned with birds, feathers, and jewel-toned glassware and botanicals. The plates are designed with sectional representations of the pretty and bright floral paper that graces the walls of one of the glamorous rooms in the Beauport Sleeper-McCann House in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Interior decorator Henry Davis Sleeper actually designed homes for members of Hollywood’s elite including Joan Crawford. His design sensibility was intelligently whimsical and theatrical.

I am putting “visit the Beauport

on my 2011 to-do list!

Sparkly and sophisticated ...

Each week I stop by New England Fine Living to check out the new items that have arrived since my last visit. Occasionally I am dropping off design items of my own, but this week I was just popping in to say “hi to the owner, Linda Smith. Great news did arrive recently — the shop has been nominated for an award from the Retailers Association of Massachusetts and will be judged in two categories, “Creative Concepts in Retailing” and “Visual Display.” Every time I go in, the store looks fresh and the inventory is always put together in charming vignettes (my favorite part of design!) Linda has a way of showcasing the variety of offerings in the best possible light. Here are some displayed items that caught my eye ...

Fashionable “Style Pics” from Jennifer Scala

Houndstooth Footstool by Paula Savage

Carpet Coasters from First Oriental Rugs of Danvers

Decorative objects from a number of vendors

Art on a bottle by Jack Walsh of Dancing Sand

Do these guys look familiar?

featuring the Lee Mansion

Historical design side note: Click here for a video tour of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead, Massachusetts. These decoupage plates were designed using images from the hand-painted 18th century English wallpaper that is still on the walls. It is the oldest paper of its kind in existence!

If you live locally, you can visit the Lee Mansion through October. We went one year with our garden club and toured both inside and out. The grounds in June (as shown in the photo above) were beautiful!

And please let me know if you get a chance
to visit New England Fine Living!

New store sneak peek!

Do you like glitz and glam? Fabulous home fashions and pretty cocktail attire? If you are looking for something with an extra bit of designer sparkle to add to your home or wardrobe than you will love New England Fine Living, a new lifestyle boutique that will be opening on October 1st at 106 Main Street in Middleton, Massachusetts. Store owner, Linda Smith, a local interior designer and event stylist, is putting together a showroom full of cool design items and gorgeous ready-to-wear fashions. New England Fine Living will be a one-stop shop where a fashionista can pick out the perfect little black dress to wear to an evening cocktail party and then grab a hostess gift-to-go at the same time! The shop will also be filled with lots of designer accessories for the home, including some “gently loved
pre-owned furnishings.

Here are a few snapshots of what you’ll see
(but there is so much more to come!)

Vintage jewelry

Fine upholstered pieces plus on-trend accessories

Decorative objects for the home

Glamorous fashions

Designs from Neptune 1 Studios

Framed art by Rosanne Palazola

Distinctive and custom-designed pieces

When I heard about this new design destination (which is practically around the corner from my home) I knew it would be the perfect location for me to both buy and sell. I have already been to the shop a couple of times to set up items in the white “cottage glam
room on the second floor (yes, there will be two whole floors of great stuff!) I will be offering a mix of unique pieces from some of my recent design show projects along with vintage-like items that have been given a touch of modern designer style (much like my favorite designer Nate Berkus is doing with second-hand furniture on his great new daytime show on ABC). There is still room for more vendors, so if you are interested in learning how you could add some of your own designer items to the mix, simply contact Linda for more information. But do it soon so that you can be there for the grand opening on October 1st!

Also in October, Linda will be styling an event for the Ipswich Rotarty Club. It looks like it will be a fun night out and it will surely be stylish! If you plan to attend and need the perfect black dress, stop by New England Fine Living and Linda will be happy to hook you up!
